Residential Consulting
Research shows that every setting affects us emotionally, especially our homes. The setting also affects our ability to think and it determines our behavior. Smart homeowners make use of this fact to create wonderful places to live. Successful homes all have one thing in common: they reflect the personalities of the residents and nurture their souls. Matching the personality of the residents to the space is psychological task that Dr. Morris is expert in.
You FIRST, Your Home Second
To create a supportive home, Dr. Morris begins FIRST by learning who you are - your personality and your needs - as she is trained to do as a depth psychologist and a certified Feng Shui practitioner - and THEN works on your space. She translates your personality into the layout and contents of your home so both your functional needs and psychological needs are met equally well - you have an inspiring home.
The problem with most interior design processes is that they begin with the space, not the people in the space. Yes, there are basic functions that a home must meet – a place to eat, a place to sleep, a place for bodily functions — it’s not difficult to meet those basic needs. However, using only a functional approach to designing a home is like focusing only on the calorie count to meet your dietary needs, but ignoring, your food preferences, nutritional requirements, your health, and food allergies.
What Are Home Make-Over Shows Making Over?
Home make-over shows seem magical – move this, add that, paint this, hang that and voila – instant transformation all in half an hour! For the residents the results may be less than magical, for the changes focus on the space, not the people per se. The space may be more functional or more attractive, but we don’t know how these changes are affecting residents once the cameras leave. Do they look nice but fail to inspire?
Does the newly done home facilitate family togetherness or contribute to residents retreating to separate areas? Is there a space that enables a home-based entrepreneur to work more efficiently, feel good about him or herself, and lead to business success? Has a couple’s love life been diminished because the bedroom fails to mirror their personalities thereby inhibiting romance? Is the space too stimulating on an everyday basis? Does the clean new look neglect a resident’s need to display family photos?
We don’t know the answers to these questions because the shows are focused on the space first and the residents a distant second. The show seeks to meet the functional needs of the residents, not their personality type.
